Philosophy of Education
Passionate About Inspiring Others
I am an elementary education major with a certification in pre-kindergarten accredited to teach pre- kindergarten through sixth grade. I have graduated from the University of Alabama in May 2016 after completing my final internship in Auckland, New Zealand at the Gladstone Primary School. Through my practicum experiences throughout college and my current teaching experience as a fifth grade reading and English language arts teacher, I have come to the philosophy of engaging students to become explorers of their own knowledge to further evolve their critical thinking skills. I believe my global teaching experience will allow me to better fulfill this philosophy due to the many strategies I have been able to observe and administer during field experiences. Below is my educational philosophy.
“A quality education has the power to transform societies in a single generation, provide children with the protection they need from the hazards of poverty, labor exploitation, and disease, and given them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reach their full potential.”
The previous quote was stated by Audrey Hepburn and is part of the reasoning to why I became an elementary education major. After working in an inner-city school with both fourth and sixth graders the summer preceding my junior year of college as well as student teaching in a pre-kindergarten classroom the summer before my senior year and my current experience as a fifth grade teacher at a Title I school, I found this quote to mean more to me than it had before I started my college career. The elementary stage in a student’s schooling is the most important because it develops their interest and way of learning. Students come to us in elementary school from different backgrounds, and we as teachers can show them that learning is enticing and can take you anywhere you want to be as long as you work at it, which pays off. Technology is such a necessary tool in today's world, and if it is used correctly, it will add to the positive transformation in our future generation of today's learners.
